Project Summaries
Brownfields Investigation
Envirotactics conducted a complete soil and groundwater remedial investigation of a
Brownfields site located in Newark, New Jersey involving investigation of a
turn-of-the-century manufacturing facility that had impacted soils and groundwater at a 7
acre site. More than 25 Areas of Concern were identified and delineated at the site which
included PCB, metals, petroleum, and volatile organic contamination. Investigation was
conducted utilizing test pits, geoprobe borings, and drill rigs to collect over 125 soil
samples. In addition, seventeen monitoring wells were installed including deep bedrock
wells for vertical delineation. A soil and groundwater remediation design was developed
involving removal and disposal of "hot spot" soil contamination followed by
capping of the site. The design also included the demolition and crushing of the onsite
buildings. The crushed concrete was designed to be reused on site as capping material.
Groundwater remediation involved enhanced bioremediation utilizing oxygen releasing
compounds and long term monitoring. All work was completed utilizing grant money from the
New Jersey Economic Development Authority Hazardous Discharge Site Remediation Fund.
Underground Storage Tank Remediation
Envirotactics completed the removal of 17 underground storage tanks and performed the
associated soil/groundwater remedial investigations at a site in Hillsborough, New Jersey.
Soil investigations were conducted to confirm that all discharges were properly remediated
subsequent to soil excavation and disposal from areas of tank discharges. Eleven
groundwater monitoring wells were installed to evaluate the groundwater in the area of the
tank discharges. Soil management and reuse plans were developed following excavation and
stockpiling of petroleum contaminated soil generated during tank removals. The stockpiled
soil was treated on site using bioremediation as an alternative option to disposal.
Landfarming was used to bioremediate the petroleum. After the petroleum contaminants were
degraded, confirmation soil sampling was conducted and the soil re-used onsite for
materials such as road base.
Gasoline Station Remediation
Envirotactics devised a soil and groundwater remediation plan to address contamination
following the removal of five gasoline underground storage tanks from a former gasoline
station located in Livingston, New Jersey. The design included the excavation and disposal
of contaminated soil and remediation of groundwater through the in-situ chemical oxidation
via injection of a hydrogen peroxide solution into the aquifer to destroy volatile organic
compounds through chemical oxidation. The design also included the long-term monitoring of
8 monitoring wells and an adjacent stream.
Mold
Envirotactics conducted a complete indoor air quality and microbial assessment at a
financial institution located in Brick, New Jersey that was triggered due to employee
complaints about general illness, odors and overall poor indoor air quality. The results
of the indoor air quality and mold assessment revealed the presence of Stachybotrys
Chartarum. Envirotactics assisted the client in the preparation of technical
specifications for the microbial remediation. Envirotactics also performed the collection
of post-remediation clearance samples to document the effectiveness of the cleanup
contractor and to ensure the absence of airborne Stachybotrys spores. Ultimately, the
overall indoor air quality in the building and contents were completely resolved of mold
contamination with limited disruption to business operations.
Even in today's real estate market, any
transfer of a residential or commercial property may require some form of environmental
investigation for dealing with mold issues. The investigation may consist of performing a
limited mold assessment, or simply doing a "walk-through" inspection to
determine if any significant environmental concerns are present. Envirotactics has highly
qualified and experienced personnel to handle specific indoor air quality and mold
concerns.
Wetlands
Envirotactics conducted a wetlands delineation at a 900+ acre site in Ocean County New
Jersey. The scope of work for this project included conducting wetlands assessments and
delineations and the review of existing delineations. This also included amending and
re-delineating the older lines. Due to the size of the subject property and tax lot
designations, the client requested that the property be separated into zones. As part of
this project, several Letter of Interpretation (LOI) applications were submitted to and
approved by the NJDEP. Following completion of the wetlands assessments and delineations,
an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was also prepared and submitted to the
municipality for review. Envirotactics personnel provided expert testimony for the EIS at
the municipal Planning Board Meetings.
