Soil & Groundwater Services

Underground Storage Tank Investigations
Envirotactics can investigate the subject property using a metal locator or ground penetrating radar (GPR) services to determine the absence and/or presence of underground storage tanks. This information can be useful in assisting a buyer and/or homeowner during the property transaction.

If a tank is present on the property, Envirotactics can test the soils surrounding an underground storage tank by installing soil borings, performing a visual inspection of each soil boring, and submitting at least one soil sample to an independent laboratory for analysis. The information is helpful in determining whether a potential leak has occurred for the tank system and if further investigation or removal is warranted.

If a residential heating oil tank is not in use, or gas conversion is being considered, Envirotactics offers complete tank removal and abandonment services. By removing a UST, it will also help remove the "stigma" often associated with underground storage tanks thus making the property more marketable and reducing any liabilities often associated with USTs.

Another option, if allowed by local ordinance, is to simply abandon the tank in-place. This option is helpful only when it has been determined that the tank can not be removed due to access constraints, or when the structural integrity of footings or foundations may be compromised during the removal.

Envirotactics has extensive experience performing underground storage tank removals and abandonments. Envirotactics project managers are OSHA trained and certified by the NJDEP as Cleanup Stars and UST Closure/Subsurface Evaluators, which is required to perform tank closures and subsurface investigations of leaking underground storage tanks. Envirotactics can skillfully handle all phases of projects from tank registration and/or permitting, closure plan application and case closure (no further action).

In addition, Envirotactics has successfully worked with many insurance companies while assisting homeowners during the investigation and cleanup of leaking underground storage tanks.

When a suspected discharge has occurred or historical operations dictate that a potential area of concern be investigated, Envirotactics specializes in performing subsurface soil and groundwater investigations and sampling. Investigative techniques used include surface sampling, test pits, soil borings or probes, monitoring well installation, temporary well point installation and soil vapor gas surveys. Regulatory sampling guidelines and quality assurance/quality control procedures are followed and maintained at all times.

The results of investigations are utilized to evaluate appropriate remedial alternatives or to support "no further action" requests. Modeling of contaminants in soil and groundwater can be performed to provide additional supporting documentation. Envirotactics uses modeling to determine classification exception areas of impacted groundwater and implementation of natural remediation programs.

Envirotactics personnel have extensive experience in underground storage tank removals or abandonments. Envirotactics is OSHA, and NJDEP-certified to perform tank closures and subsurface investigations, of which is required by companies performing the removal or investigation of regulated and non-regulated underground storage tanks in New Jersey. We skillfully handle all phases of projects from tank registration and closure plan application to case closure (no further action).
